Social media platforms have had a tremendous impact on the feminist movement. It reshaped how activism is organized, communicated, and experienced all together. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, X, and Facebook, have provided women with tools to amplify their voices and challenge traditional narratives about gender inequality.

Online spaces are easily accessible and cost-effective, attracting a mass of users and feminist organizations to speak up for what they believe in. Online feminist activism has provided opportunities for feminists globally to network and work together.

Traditional feminism laid the foundation for what gender equality is and should look like. Modern feminism is embracing the changing times and adapting to new ways to spread awareness and push for change.

Aside from spreading awareness of women’s rights issues, social media provides users with education on women’s history and current events related to feminism. Ultimately, this promotes advocacy for better gender equality.

Also, feminists today understand the influx of intersectional feminist voices due to the online presence and movement on social media, recognizing the intersection of race, class, gender, and other factors that affect women across the globe. Together, they empower one another.

Dylan Mulvaney, a trans TikTok influencer, not only uses her platform to advocate for trans rights, but also women’s rights. She advocates for intersectional inclusion in the feminist movement. Mulvaney has been applauded by feminists all over the internet for her informative and empowering content.

In October 2022, Mulvaney was invited to the White House by President Biden for an interview. During this interview, they talked about the crucial issues the feminist and trans communities face.

Malala Yousafzai is a feminist activist who works to advocate for gender equality in the world of education. She is a known feminist, the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and continues her work of being a prominent voice for women and their education.

Yousafzai takes advantage of social media platforms to continue her activism and promote education for girls around the world. She set up a foundation, The Malala Fund, to provide educational opportunities for girls.

Additionally, she has a strong social media presence. She emphasizes the dangers of disinformation, discrimination, and hate speech, especially towards women This hateful rhetoric is one of the top priorities feminists across social media deal with and fight against.

By advocating for feminism with flyers, positive messages, effective campaigns, and even humor, social media continues to be a widely used medium to speak up. The presence of social media transformed and continues to transform the narratives of how people advocate for what they believe in.

Not only can social media have a positive impact on the feminist movement, it can also lead to a lot of negatives such as discrimination hate speech, threats, and harassment. Although digital campaigns have brought the issue to a brighter light, it can also be a dangerous place.

On one hand, it has brought many women together to create a massive feminist community. On the other hand, it also provokes anti-feminism rhetoric and intimidation.

Despite the double-edged sword social media and feminism can be, social media continues to act as a medium to advocate and empower women across the globe. Feminists persevere and stand up for their rights.
