The 2025 Grammys nominations for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards were announced Friday, Nov. 8, and this year’s nominees feature many notable women within the pop industry. Among the top nominees are artists such as Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli xcx.
The Grammys nominations follow a summer dominated by Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet,” Charli xcx’s “brat,” and Chappell Roan’s “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” Other notable releases this year included Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine,” Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” and Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter.”
All of the ‘Big Four' categories at the Grammys this year feature a majority of notable female artists, so the competition is going to be fierce.
In the 2025 Grammy nominations, female artists claimed six out of eight spots for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, as well as Album of the Year. Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, two artists who stepped into the limelight in 2024, also received nominations for Best New Artist.
Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine," though snubbed from the ‘''Big Four''’ categories, was nominated for three categories. Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour concert movie, which was left out of the Best Music Film category, was another snub for Grammy nominations.
Swift’s “Fortnight” did not make the cut for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, although she still made the category with “Us” by Gracie Abrams. Swift is also in competition for Album of the Year, being the only artist to win the award a total of four times so far, with her albums “Midnights” (2024), “Folklore” (2021), “1989” (2016), and “Fearless” (2010).
A fifth win would be even more historic, but again, the competition for the award will be fierce.
The 2025 nominations represent an uptick in women’s recognition in music – a trend that started with last year’s 2024 awards. Awards ceremonies are infamously known as being a ‘boys club,’ dominantly featuring men in the 'Big Four' categories.
However, during the 2024 Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Billie Eilish took home three out of the four categories of the ‘Big Four.’ Five years before 2024, 90.7 percent of Grammy Award nominees were men.
The marginalization of women in the music industry is why the complete turnaround for women in the Grammys nominations for 2024 and 2025 is so monumental. Women are breaking records across the board in the music industry.
Beyonce’s monumental 11 nominations for the 2025 awards make her the most nominated artist in Grammy history, with 99 nominations and 32 Grammy wins in total. Following Beyonce are Charli xcx and Billie Eilish with seven nominations, and then Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift with six apiece.
Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan’s nominations are an achievement for both artists, with 2025 being the first Grammys awards that both have been nominated for. Both are also nominated in the ‘Big Four’ categories, an even greater achievement for 2025 being their first Grammys ceremony.
Carpenter and Roan’s nominations come as no shock after the monumental summer both albums had. Carpenter’s “Espresso” and Roan’s “HOT TO GO!” were featured in Spotify’s Songs of the Summer, alongside Billie Eilish’s “BIRDS OF A FEATHER.”
Carpenter and Roan have both had mind-boggling rises to fame, reaching new heights with both of their albums over the summer.
The pop music industry is truly experiencing a ‘Femininomenon,’ to reference Roan’s iconic song from her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”. The top artists in the pop industry are women, putting talented female artists in the spotlight to receive recognition for their music.
In an industry that has long favored male artists, this turn of the spotlight represents a positive change for women.
